Why Is It That Some Accents Are So Sexy?

Right now I am writing a book for a client and the male character that is the main character of the novel begins his life in England, thus, had he been a real person, he would have a British accent. As a result, I find myself speaking, in my head, the phrases he says in a British Accent. Ok, so it is not really a British accent, but the closest thing I can manage. Nevertheless, I find the character to be even more appealing because I picture him speaking in such a way, which makes me wonder (not for the first time in my life) why are some accents so sexy? And, do people from other countries find our accents to be such?

If you ask most women from my area what accents are the sexiest, you are likely to get one of two answers. Either she will answer with “oh, definitely the British accent “or “Australian men are so hot.” The two are close, which makes sense given the intertwined history of the nations. Without doubt, and as most women would agree, both have an overwhelming positive effect on the overall level of attraction toward a person of the opposite sex. You don’t agree? Consider these examples of actors that are not much on the eyes, but have still found their way on to many “I love you,______” and “marry me, _______”fan posters. Gordon Ramsey of Hell’s Kitchen is definitely not what most would consider being the picture of perfection in looks or manner, yet women on the show and beyond swoon over him. Another man that proves this point is the former host of American Idol. Simon Cowell is fairly attractive, but it really his voice (and maybe his smile) that make the women fall at his feet. Just ask Paula and Kara.

Accents can also work in the reverse, making a person appear far less attractive. As example, consider the infamous voice of Fran Drescher. Annoyingly whiny to the nth degree, that accent would make one want to dive under a nearby carpet in an effort to escape it, which doesn’t do much for her when attempting to attract the opposite sex. How about Wilmer Valderrama? Bad name plus bad accent equals really unattractive character. Sorry Wilmer! My kids are happy to put up with your accent on Handy Manny, but I would much prefer you if you uttered the “you break it, we’ll fix it” tag line in an Australian tongue.
